  3. A rapidly rotating neutron star with a mass comparable to that of the Sun's, but collapsed into a sphere about 20 km 
  4. across. Pulsars are divided into slow second pulsars and fast millisecond pulsars according to their speed of rotation. 
  5. The latter are former double pulsars that have 'eaten' their partners and thus gained their huge speed of rotation.
  6. Pulsars are like beacons sending out regular flashes of electromagnetic radiation, varying from short-waved X rays to 
  7. radio frequencies.
  8. Pulsars result from supernova explosions.

  10. The first pulsar, emitting on radio frequencies, was discovered by British Antony Hewish and Jocelyn Bell in 1967. 
  11. Over five hundred pulsars have been discovered to date.
